What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “For me, self-care in farming means knowing when to step back and take a breather. It’s easy to get caught up in the nonstop pace—there’s always something to fix, clean, or check on. But I’ve learned that if I don’t make time to reset, I’m not much good to anyone. What helps most is doing something simple that gets my mind off the daily grind—watching or lightly kicking a soccer ball around, being outside with my kids, or sitting down for an unrushed meal with my wife. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Just something that clears my head and reminds me why we chose this life.”

How I might use this $100 self-care award: “I’d use it for soccer—either tickets to a game or a new pair of cleats. It’s a way I stay connected to the things I enjoy, spend time with my kids, and take a mental break from the day-to-day.”

Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: "In the end, the biggest part of well-being for me is making time to reset and be present with my family. It’s not about avoiding work—it’s about finding small ways to maintain focus and protect what matters most. Taking care of my body and mind by stepping away from the farm when I can, even for a brief moment, is crucial. It’s not about avoiding work—it’s about being able to return to it with more energy, clarity, and purpose. Soccer, especially, gives me the mental clarity and physical movement that helps me decompress and keep my perspective fresh. Ultimately, maintaining this balance allows me to be a better farmer, a better husband, and a better dad.”
