The 618th recipient is Sarah Lang of Conundrum Farm in Kent, CT. Sarah writes:

What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “It means taking time to get off the farm, both physically and mentally. To step away from the endless to-do list and financial stress, and just be. To find balance. Going for a hike, or out to eat, or just to spend time sitting down calling my Grandma all help balance out the work load.”

How I might use this $100 self-care award: ”I would have an acupuncture session at the studio in my town. The goal would be to relax. And to alleviate ongoing chronic back pain. In this way, helping both body and soul.”

Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: "Having the time and the money to do even the smallest self care. Time is limited by the demands of the season, made worse by a critical shortage of hired help (the farm is an island in the middle of an area completely lacking affordable housing/there’s no where for workers to live). Taking time for me would mean even more crops lost to weeds or not seeded. We’re going to have trouble meeting production goals this year. Hard to prioritize anything else when we will work ourselves to the bone with likely no profit. And the lack of profit means we must prioritize basic needs like food and shelter. While fun is necessary for mental health, we just don’t have money for anything besides survival.”
