The 635th recipient is Sadie Higgins of Astarte Farm in Hadley, MA. Sadie writes:

What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “Many of the farmers I know have left farming because, although their passion for growing food is still there, they get burnt out. To me, self-care means having the opportunity to give yourself the gift of TIME to take care of both your body and your mind. Farming is a full time job beyond the work day and there are a lot of sacrifices that come with that - sacrificing time with friends and family, time to cook healthy meals everyday, time to rest, time for therapy or meditation, or time for body care like yoga, massage, or acupuncture.”

How I might use this $100 self-care award: ”I would use a $100 self-care award for yoga classes. Yoga can be expensive and it is hard to find time but whenever I have the opportunity to go, the benefits are numerous. Having the space to really center myself and focus on caring for my body is a treat.”

Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: "For me, I think I need time to focus on caring for my body and mind. Whether this means simply having the time to rest, or being able to afford a massage, yoga/meditation classes, therapy sessions, acupuncture, etc. it can be hard to prioritize those things while also using my limited wages to do so when I can find the time.”
