The 550th recipient is Karena Poke of Lettuce Live Farm in Dayton, TX. Karena writes:

What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “In the context of farming, self-care and well-being mean creating intentional moments of rest, joy, and connection amidst the demands of daily work. For me, this looks like gathering with friends and family on the farm to share a farm-to-table meal, enjoy music, and dance together. It’s also found in quieter moments—sitting on the patio with a cup of herbal tea and a good book, grounding myself in the beauty of the land. These practices help restore my energy, keep me connected to my purpose, and sustain my commitment to the work.”
How I might use this $250 self-care award: ”I would use the $250 award to hire a massage therapist to come to the farm for a 90-minute massage. Not having to drive home after the massage is the topping on the cake. I'll simply walk out on the patio and treat myself a cold glass of herbal tea and a fancy takeout meal, allowing me to fully relax and enjoy a moment of rest and nourishment without the need to cook or prepare food.”
Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: "I believe rest is one of the most important and overlooked self-care needs for farmers and ranchers. Small-scale farmers like myself often take on the majority of the physical labor and daily operations, leaving little time to prioritize our own health. Consistent, intentional rest—along with eating healthy, nourishing meals—is essential for maintaining physical stamina, mental clarity, and long-term well-being. Without it, the work becomes unsustainable, both for me and the farm. Everyday I strive to do better with prioritizing self-care and rest. Some days are better than others.”
