RECIPIENTS

Jeff Miller of Liberty Prairie

The 317th recipient is Jeff Miller of Liberty Prairie @libertyprairie in Grayslake, IL. Jeff writes:

What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “Self-care and well-being means preventing burnout. This means taking time for simple things like a short mediation and breathing exercise before starting the tractor, or limiting multi-tasking to stay present in (and appreciating the aspects of) a farm task.”

How I might use this $100 self-care award: “My wife and I strive to take 1-2 weekends away from the farm during the farm season to reset ourselves. While we normally accomplish one of these weekends away through a visit to our college student, I would like to take a weekend away to a local town to attend a concert or go to a museum. This award would contribute towards a perspective-changing activity, to fill-up my creative cup, and to engage with different senses than I typically use in my daily farming work.”

Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: “Time away from day-to-day life to gain perspective. We live and work on our farm, and oftentimes, we entertain family and friends at the farm, so we spend the majority of our lives in place-based activities at the farm. Taking moments away from the farm to focus on breathing, slowing thoughts, exploring outside hobbies and passions and focusing on gratitude is critical for mental wellbeing.”
