What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “To me, self-care and well-being in farming means staying mentally and physically strong so I can continue to serve my family, farm, and community for the long haul. Farmers and ranchers often experience burnout, depression, and health issues from pushing themselves through long, unsustainable hours. Over time, this can strain not only the individual, but also their family life and the health of their business. I believe that prioritizing well-being isn’t selfish, it’s essential. Mindset coaching has helped me create better boundaries, build healthier habits, and achieve a sustainable work-life balance. It’s given me the tools to not only preserve my passion for farming, but also to support other farmers in doing the same. When we invest in our own well-being, we ensure that the land, animals, and communities we care for continue to thrive too.”
How I might use this $250 self-care award: ”I would use the $250 award to continue working with my mindset coach, Stephanie from Being Me Better. Her six-week coaching sessions help me recognize and shift limiting beliefs and negative thought patterns into more positive, productive ones. This mindset work has been essential in helping me find a healthier work-life balance, make clearer decisions for our farm, and prevent burnout. It's not just about me, it’s also about the group of farmers I support and lead, especially now as we navigate the uncertainty following the loss of Ohio CAN funding. These farmers are looking to me for guidance and stability. Continuing this coaching would allow me to show up as the focused, grounded leader they need, while also tending to my own mental health. Strengthening my mindset ensures I can continue moving our farm and our community forward, even in challenging times.”
Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: "The most important self-care need for me as a farmer is strengthening my mindset to create sustainable work-life balance. Farming demands so much physically and mentally, and without strong mental resilience, it’s easy to fall into burnout, exhaustion, and poor decision-making. Through mindset coaching, I work on identifying limiting beliefs and shifting negative thought patterns, which helps me stay clear, focused, and intentional in how I manage my farm, my family, and my leadership roles. Especially in times of uncertainty, like navigating the loss of Ohio CAN funding, tending to my mindset allows me to continue supporting both the farmers and the family who rely on me. Prioritizing mental and emotional well-being not only preserves my love for farming, but ensures I can lead through challenges with strength, serve my community, and show up fully for the people who matter most.”
