What self-care and well-being mean to me as a farmer: “Self-care and well-being means being able to care for our physical bodies/minds while performing highly strenuous tasks or just tasks that involve a lot of actions that have to be repeated over and over. Like right now it is planting garlic season, which involves a lot of bending over and squatting. So the self-care for this task is stretching before, and stretching after. Making an organized plan for planting to maximize time and output for over all well being. Another part of self-care for myself right now with farming is being able to take some down time to rest and recover, being able to reflect on high season in what worked and what didn’t. Now in our 4th growing season, we are reevaluating what makes the most sense to grow for our next spring season, and might make some pivots for the well-being our our farm and farmers.”
How I might use this $100 self-care award: “It would be nice to book a yoga class or two, to do some stretching and strengthening. Or it would be nice to use the award to buy a pair of coveralls pants that are water proof with lots of pockets to help for harvest day.”
Most important self-care needs that contribute to my well-being as a farmer: “Time. The most important self-care is our time, and being able to work a normal amount of hours to make a living wage. Being efficient and very smart about plantings and crops.”
